https://thehill.com/policy/national-security/3698437-federal-judge-sentences-steve-bannon-to-four-months-in-prison/

Steve Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison Friday for his defiance of a subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

The one-time White House strategist was subpoenaed by the panel in September of last year after he failed to provide either the required documents or testimony as he railed against the committee.

Bannon claimed that he was unable to comply with the committee’s subpoena due to executive privilege. However, the panel sought to speak to Bannon about events that occurred well after his short stint in the White House.

Federal district court Judge Carl Nichols ruled that Bannon would also pay a fine of $6,500 alongside his four month sentence, allowing Bannon to serve jailtime for each contempt of Congress charge concurrently.

At the outset of the hearing Nichols said Bannon had shown “no remorse for his actions” and “has yet to demonstrate he has any intention of complying with the subpoena.”

But the judge also agreed to stay his ruling while Bannon appeals his guilty verdict.

A Justice Department prosecutor argued that Bannon deserved a severe penalty for his wholesale resistance to the committee’s subpoena, noting that “he never lifted a finger to find a responsive document” or appear in person to assert any potential privileges.

“The importance of this case has everything to do with defendant’s obligations as a citizen of the United States,” assistant U.S. attorney Joseph Cooney told the court.

“No one, regardless of their means, their station, the influence of their friends or their patrons, is above the law.”

Bannon’s attorneys – David Schoen, one of President Trump’s impeachment attorneys, and Evan Corcoran, who is currently representing the former president in the Mar-a-Lago case – argued Bannon had little choice but inaction when faced with the committee subpoena.

His hands were tied by Trump’s claim of executive privilege, they argued, with Schoen saying it was the “only lawful course he could take consistent with the Constitution and his obligation.”

A jury largely rejected that argument when it found Bannon guilty on both counts of contempt of Congress.

There's always someone dumber...

Michael Cohen's troubles just keep coming.

In the yearslong legal saga over his connection to the hush money payments from Donald Trump to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, Cohen's lawyer filed a motion to end his supervised release early in a filing at the end of November.

In it, Cohen's lawyer, David M. Schwartz, cites three District Court decisions as a rationale for the move.

The problem? Those cases aren't real.

“As far as the Court can tell, none of these cases exist,” U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman wrote in a Tuesday order, which asks Schwartz to provide evidence the cases exist by next Tuesday or face sanctions.

That might be a hard task, given that, when contacted, the circuit court that the order says affirmed the cases found “no record of any of the three decisions,” wrote Furman, an appointee of President Barack Obama.

The cases, regardless of how and why they were cited, certainly amount to further headaches for the 57-year-old Cohen — who at one point earlier this year was considering a run for Congress in New York's 12th Congressional District, the historic Manhattan-based seat currently held by Rep. Jerry Nadler.

Schwartz did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the cases. Cohen hung up the phone when POLITICO called asking for comment.

The case at hand began in August 2018, when Cohen admitted in court that Trump had directed him to coordinate payments to two women in exchange for their staying silent about interactions with Trump during his first presidential campaign.

In 2022, TIME named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy its 'Person of the Year'

TIME magazine has released its "Person of the Year" shortlist for 2023, a star-studded list of political and cultural leaders that includes Chinese President Xi Jinping, American pop star Taylor Swift and British monarch King Charles III.

The list, released first to NBC's "Today Show," also included chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell, the hit film "Barbie," and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Swift, who recently surpassed a $1 billion net worth in October, according to Bloomberg, is one of the most influential music talents in history. The "1989" singer-songwriter is one of the few musicians to achieve this financial feat with just music releases and performances, the outlet reported.

"Taylor is in a unique position, in terms of monetizing her talent. In an era where artists have lost millions — as album sales gave way to digital downloads — she's actually riding the tech wave, instead of going out with the digital tide," branding expert Doug Eldridge told FOX Business.

President Biden called Xi a "dictator" in November during a press conference concluding the U.S.-China summit in San Francisco. Biden was responding to a reporter who asked if Biden would still refer to Xi using the term, which he used for the first time in June.

"Well, look, he is. He's a dictator in the sense that he's a guy who runs a country that is a communist country, that is based on a form of government that is totally different than ours," Biden said.

Biden's first reference to Xi as a "dictator" came amid the aftermath of a Chinese spy balloon traversing the continental U.S., which caused an uproar after the president waited until it was off the coast of South Carolina before giving the order to bring it down.

King Charles, who recently celebrated his 75th birthday, has at times been overshadowed by press coverage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle this year.

Christopher Andersen, author of "The King," told Fox News Digital that Harry alienated himself from his father after he wrote about the king's beloved wife, Camilla, in an explosive memoir titled "Spare."

In 2022, TIME named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy its "Person of the Year," beating out nine other individuals or groups who were finalists. The "spirit of Ukraine" was also honored in recognition of Ukrainians' resistance to the Russian invaders of their country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also made the list of finalists from TIME staff, as his country continues to wage war with Ukraine. Putin was previously the 2007 TIME Person of the Year.
